The Espinosa Rugarcía Foundation (ESRU) is a private charitable institution whose purpose is to promote the educational development of Mexicans through research, competitions, and projects aimed at the most vulnerable sectors of society. It also provides support to various civil society organizations that also work for and in education.
ESRU firmly believes that education is one of the primary factors for growth and improving the quality of life of the country's inhabitants.

HISTORY

The ESRU Foundation was founded on October 3, 2000, in Mexico City by Amparo Espinosa Rugarcía, following the legacy of her father, Manuel Espinosa Yglesias. In its early years, the institution focused its efforts on research, analysis, and training on topics related to education in Mexico, establishing partnerships with various educational authorities in Mexico and the United States. Based on this work, the Foundation decided to award scholarships and financial support to low-income individuals, as well as donations to civil society organizations working to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable sectors of the population—women, children, the elderly, and at-risk youth, among others. In 2005, ESRU expanded its work by opening a new office in the city of Puebla, where scholarship and financial support projects were implemented. In addition, it began holding events to promote the preservation of Mexican traditions through exhibitions and workshops, as well as to foster a love of reading and writing among primary school children. Over the years, the ESRU Foundation has created additional projects to motivate and positively impact the educational development of different sectors of society; examples of these include: ESRU Awards (2005), ESRU Capacita (2007), ESRU Escucha (2008), ESRU Adopta (2009), and ESRU Vincula (2015)..

Manuel

Espinosa Yglesias

Manuel Espinosa Yglesias was born in the city of Puebla on May 9, 1909. He was one of the most prominent and morally influential businessmen in the country during the second half of the 20th century. He transitioned from a thriving industry, the film industry, to a banking company with national impact. Manuel believed that the well-being of Mexicans would be achieved through job creation, for which increased productive investment was essential. His thinking was liberal and deeply social, encompassing everything from women's rights and prerogatives (long before they were in vogue) to the conviction that human beings should fully develop in all their facets. In 1979, he established his own foundation, using his own financial assets, thus giving rise to the Espinosa Rugarcía Foundation and the Espinosa Yglesias Study Center (CEEY). Following the nationalization of the banking sector by President José López Portillo on September 1, 1982, he was not allowed to use the Bank Indemnity Bonds he had been granted to acquire the Bancomer companies he was interested in. It was then that he decided to abandon all his business interests and concentrate on his philanthropic work, to which he dedicated much of his time and assets. Manuel Espinosa Yglesias's humanitarian legacy was embodied in three associations committed to the development and continuous improvement of the quality of life of Mexicans: the ESRU Foundation, the Monte Fénix Foundation, and the Amparo Foundation. These organizations address the educational and social needs of the most vulnerable sectors of the population through scholarships, grants, research, training programs, and competitions. Manuel Espinosa Yglesias died on June 8, 2000, in Mexico City.
